Recently we have been talking about the different creative ways to expose our society's issues. Using online editorials and humorous articles every one can present their opinion along with an interesting and enjoyable twist, sarcasm. Personally, I love being sarcastic. It's my way of dealing with kinds of situation. Obviously, I enjoyed  this research and had a good laugh through it.
I chose a fun article mixing two pretty well known topics: beauty pageants and homosexuality. Here comes the link:
http://politicalhumor.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm site=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andy-borowitz/miss-usa-vows-to-use-her_b_202163.html

After reading this humorous editorial I couldn't help but laugh. This article present a perfect example of beauty pageant contestants stereotype. "I will go anywhere, anytime, anyway to make my case," Miss  California said. "These breasts are made for walking." The model insisted that the best way to support homosexuals is to pose naked in front of  a camera showing her perfect silicone breasts. Everyone's reaction was immediate. Donald Trump, who owns Miss USA pageant praised Ms. Prejean for her fearlessness in the face of harsh criticism stating, "I like what I've seen of Carrie and I hope to see much more of her". I know I'm not the only one thinking that he made this expression ke or in a completely sexual way, or both.
All over the world celebrities use their "famous status" as a way to help society with issues like this one and representing minorities. The issue of homosexuality is a very popular and important matter in our society. So isn't surprising that this girl wanted to help, in a way. The shocking thing is the useless way of approaching the issue, because let's face it, how many homosexuals can you really help showing a pair of human tissue (besides the obvious sexual admiration)? ZERO. Your boobs aren't gonna change any laws, a homophobic dad will not accept its lesbian daughter and finally, they won't change the fact that the only way to deal with homosexuality is simply stop seeing it as a problem, see it as it is, just human nature.

During class, we were looking at some editorials written about some social issues. Editorials are articles written to introduce a problem or a situation in which the author gives the reader some actual statistical data to support its point and then offers a solution to it. I selected four different editorials to talk about. Those were:
1- Morning Bits - The Washington Post
2- The New Mayor and the Teachers - The New York Times
3- Desperation in Tibet- The New York Times
4- Al Rescate de la Vocacion Medica - El Nuevo Dia

I decided to write about the Spanish editorial in El Nuevo Dia because it was something that I can directly relate with because a lot of my friends want to become doctors. The article is named "Al Rescate de la Vocacion Medica" written by Ibrahim Perez. This editorial is written by a doctor who is concerned about the malpractice that has been going on lately on his profession. There are always some bad professionals that affect the image of all of the other ones, even the good ones. The doctor expresses his discontent with fraud, negligent practice and sexual abuse known lately. "El deterioro moral, social y económico que nos ha impactado durante las últimas décadas ha tocado adversamente a nuestra profesión" expressed Perez. With this article, he is trying to make a call to his colleagues to help him restore the confidence and prestige of the medicine doctors, as well as he claims the population to give them a chance to believe in existence of good doctors.
In my opinion, because of our society's problems, there have been a lot of negligent professionals in all areas. I understand his concern about his colleague's malpractice and the lack of confidence towards doctors. I agree that doctors need to have, besides knowledge, a big amount of humanity and empathy to really connect with the patient. Doctors need to see their patients with their hearts as people not as puzzles to solve. When a patient comes to you with a problem you need to show him respect and true care about his health. I think that the difference between a good doctor and a great one is the piece of heart that they give to each of their patient.
When I write about doctors, event though I am not interested in the profession directly, I feel the need to make a call. Puerto Rico is full with scientists but in need of doctors, people with a lot of empathy and  humanity. Being a Biology student here in college, I see every type of doctors-to-be. I think we have some good potential here in our campus, and of course, some of the best soon to be doctors are my best friends. I see every day how compromise they are with their studies and the big heart they have. One day they will become the type of doctor that Perez was referring to when he said: "Nuestra profesión jamás aceptará menos de sus miembros que integridad, transparencia y excelencia, porque la vida de los seres humanos depende de nuestras decisiones."

As an editorial I think that he lack a little bit of structure and data to support his answer. It was more like a way he used to express his opinion rather than an editorial.

So... we were asked to write a list about some things or situations that actually make me feel really mad or uncomfortable either personally or socially and here they are:

32- Not enough time to sleep
At first, when we were assigned this assignment I thought that my list will be super long, but as I wrote things that actually bother me I noticed they weren't as many as I thought. Actually things that made me mad in our society are just summarized as a lack of common sense and education. It's not complicated to park nicely or to say some kind words to strangers when they let the door open for you. There are so many little things that a person can do that shows education and more importantly respect towards other human beings. I think that the clue to improve our society's quality is to really think about the other person. Its really simple actually, if you get mad if someone steals your parking in a shopping mall, DON'T DO IT. I'm pretty sure that it will piss off the other person as well. The trick toward a peaceful living is simply:  "Vive y deja vivir"
Personally, the things that bother me are based on my experience. They are all the things that just made my life a little bit miserable. And of course it bothers me, it completely sucks that every person that you know and you "let into your life" has the power to make you feel bad. As well, this persons also can make you have the best feelings and have the best experiences. In my opinion, this little things that piss me off are just a little part of who I am. So, I can live happily knowing them and evading them for as long as I want :D

At class we saw a Disney documentary questioning some Disney's classic movies messages.
I grew up seeing Disney movies. I love their songs and the images. My favorite Disney movie of all time is The Beauty and The Beast. When I was a little girl I just remember thinking that I was a lot like Belle wanting to know the world and have adventures, and of course reading all the time. When I was in school I spent every afternoon of my week reading a different book every year. I remember that the first book I read was, casually, was The Beauty and The Beast, yes people, I know what you are thinking , I read the book and owned the movie as well. I think that my love for reading was influenced a little bit by Belle and I'm not ashamed to admit it. More than finding love I have always dreamed about the beast's library...amazing!

Every one of Disney movie is based on a historical time and place. Each movie is adapted to the time it was created. I don't think that they wanted to send an specific message to the kids on purpose. They just reflect the thoughts of the time they were done. Its important to remember that this movies, even though they are usually enjoyed by teens and adults, they are created for kids. They have pretty amazing images and colors and let's face it, no kid is going to see "Sleeping Beauty" and think "Oh my this movie is so sexist, why does the prince have to kiss her in order to save her?, why does the princess doesn't fight with the evil dragon to save her love?"  I really don't think that a kid will think so. Everything around us have a double meaning if you let it have it.

Seeing this documentary doesn't change my opinion or my love for Disney movies and Disney World. Some of my best memories include singing a little bit too high Disney songs with my sister. I remember, even in college, putting on the Mulan theme just to motivate me and my friend to study. I enjoyed going to Disneyland in every season of the year because I truly love it. I'm a little girl at heart and I will always be. I love their movies because, sexist or not, they represent a big part of my childhood. As we grow up we like to hold up to the things that make us remember an easier time. For me, this thing I'm holding up is my Disney movies.

"Primera Vez" by Ricardo Arjona

This song is my favorite song of all time. I absolutely love it. This song describes the first time of a couple having sexual intercourse. Arjona wrote the song from the man's perspective and point of view. During the song he expresses his feelings towards the girl, while speaking directly at her, trying to expose her emotional struggle. The girl is literally a virgin and is deciding between being physically with him or not. He says, during the song, that he is not a virgin but it is also his first time making love, not sex because he is in love with her. I admire the words and comparisons Arjona uses in his writing. He has such an incredible way of expressing himself that the most simple statement seems amazing and romantic and just poetic. I adore him, choosing just one song as my favorite was really difficult task to accomplish.

"Primera Vez"
Despacio comienzo en tu boca
despacio y sin quitarte la ropa
mi cama no merece tu cuerpo
virgen como el amazonas
mucho para un lobo cazador
pero ideal para el amor
Despacio voy por tu corazón
despacio y me detiene un boton
y mientras dices basta me ayudas
esa guerra en tu vientre
entre el sigue y el detente
que hacen decisivo el presente
Tambien es mi primera vez
pondre el concierto de aranjuez
para relajarnos juntos
tambien es mi primera vez
siente como tiemblo ya ves
tuve sexo mil veces pero nunca
hice el amor
Despacio voy por tu cintura
despacio y me detiene la duda
si es que realmente merezco
robarme a la niña
y regalarte a la mujer
e inscribirme en tu ayer?
Tambien es mi primera vez
pondre el concierto de aranjuez
para relajarnos juntos
tambien es mi primera vez
siente como tiemblo ya ves
tuve sexo mil veces pero nunca
hice el amor
Tambien es mi primera vez
pondre el concierto de aranjuez
para relajarnos juntos
tambien es mi primera vez
siente como tiemblo ya ves
tuve sexo mil veces pero nunca
hice el amor.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! <3

"Party Rock" by LMFAO

Choosing a song I literally hate was a little bit difficult for me, because I tend to enjoy almost every type of music and lyrics. Lately we have been seeing a tendency that almost every noise with some catchy lyric becomes famous and everyone calls themselves an artist. Anyways I'm more into songs written in Spanish than in any other language. However I enjoy several artists that sing in other languages.
I chose "Party Rock" as the song that I dislike the most. The first time I heard it I thought it was catchy, but I wasn't so sure if I hated it or not. Then I heard it on the radio, parties, during random conversations, and I decided that it was too much. I don't know if it was that during three  consecutive months I heard like a billion times or the lack of sense of the song's lyric but I never understood why people loved it so much. The song is mainly an anthem ( actually that's its part of its title) to parties and people having fun. The main reason I don't like the song is that in my opinion it doesn't have a  real theme or  any sense. I also don't like its tune. Maybe I'm being a little bit oversensitive with it because the song was literally "quema' " but every time that I hear I just want to run away from it covering my ears.  For those of you that actually enjoy it:

"Party Rock"
Party rock!
Yeah!
Woo!

Party rock is in the house tonight
Everybody just have a good time
And we gonna make you lose your mind
Everybody just have a good time

Party rock is in the house tonight

And we gonna make you lose your mind
We just wanna see ya shake that

In the club party rock, lookin' for your girl? She on my jock
Nonstop when we in the spot, booty movin' weight like she on the block
Where the drank? I gots to know, tight jeans, tattoo 'cause I'm rock 'n' roll
Half black, half white, domino, game the money, op-a-doe

Yo, I'm runnin' through these ho's like Drano
I got that devilish flow, rock 'n' roll, no halo
We party rock, yeah, that's the crew that I'm reppin'
On the rise to the top, no lead in our zeppelin, hey

Party rock is in the house tonight
Everybody just have a good time
And we gonna make you lose your mind
Everybody just have a good time

Party rock is in the house tonight
Everybody just have a good time
And we gonna make you lose your mind
We just wanna see ya shake that

Everyday I'm shufflin'
Shufflin', shufflin'

Step up fast and be the first girl to make me throw this cash
We gettin' money, don't be mad now, stop, hatin' is bad

One more shot for us, another round
Please fill up my cup, don't mess around
We just wanna see you shake it now
Now you wanna be, you're naked now

Get up, get down, put your hands up to the sound
Get up, get down, put your hands up to the sound
Get up, get down, put your hands up to the sound
Put your hands up to the sound, put your hands up to the sound

Get up, get up, get up, get up
Get up, get up, get up, get up
Get up, put your hands up to the sound, to the sound
Put your hands up, put your hands up, put your hands up, put your hands up

Party rock is in the house tonight
(Put your hands up)
Everybody just have a good time
(Put your hands up)
And we gonna make you lose your mind
(Put your hands up)
Everybody just have a good, good, good time

Put your hands up
Put your hands up
Put your hands up
Shake that, everyday I'm shufflin'

To begin with I think I did not perform the exercise as directed. I am not a good writer under pressure and I'm pretty sure I spent almost half of the 15 minutes with my mind in an sleep mode. Anyways, I will make a brief reflection about my mini stream of words.  I have  thought of myself as a little depressed and angry person, mostly because all the things I have been dealing with lately. As I'm writing this paragraph I'm realizing that maybe I'm happier than I actually think. The  list of words that evoke great feelings is way longer than the other two lists. Maybe I considered myself a negative person when in reality my mind  is very optimistic. I had been through a couple of rough months dealing with an unexpected breakup and some other things, but this exercise makes me feel like this ugly time is almost over. I mean, everybody says that the first step to accomplished  something is to actually believe in it. So, if my mind thinks about all the positive things in my life before all the bad ones, then it actually believes that everything is okay, and eventually everything will be okay. " Everything will be okay" is my favorite quote in the whole world, is the one that I actually believe truthfully, because it is true, at the end of the day, every piece fall on its place,  forming a whole that is okay... a nicely okay :)

Just wait...

We were asked to read some reviews about some movies to see the way they were actually done and compare them with the ones that we wrote during our last class meeting.
Runner, Runner                                                         Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs 2
The author of this review gives the reader some technical standard stuff as the director of the piece and the actors. He then summarizes briefly the movie as he puts in slowly his opinion. In my opinion it was not a good review because he is just transmitting us his opinion. I think that a movie review should gives the reader the information enough to make him take his own decision, if he is interested he will see it, if it's not then no. The important thing is a movie critic will not make a decision for the reader to go to see a movie or not. I actually wanted to see this movie , but I don't know if I still want to see it because of this review.
This review was very well written. It was short and up to the point. The author added some comparisons to express his point of view and for the reader to understand what was he referring to. Even though I can't give my opinion about it because I haven't seen it yet, I think I will like it. I saw the first one and I really enjoyed it. The author of this reviews made some negative critics about it to express his opinion but he didn't interfere with the reader's choice to see it.
My Reviews

Seeing this reviews made by other people make me realize that my review was a little bit rusty. I should have made a better brief summary without giving away any information of course. I should have included some technical stuff besides the director and some actor's performance. I think a review could reflect a little bit of your own but at the same time is really important that you can also be as objective as possible, so the reader can decide if he wants to see the movie or not. Not every person is the same, we all have different tastes and opinions. After reading this I think I can do a better job as a movie critic and improve my review.

Well, as an assignment we had to select two movies and write about them as a critic. We had to write about the best movie that we had seen recently, and the worst. I have to admit that I hadn't been able to visit to go to the movies since summer, so I decided to write about the ones that I saw then.

Best: Now You See Me

115 min  -  Crime | Mystery | Thriller  -  31 May 2013 (USA)
Ratings: 7.3/10

I had to say I was really surprised with this movie. I remember going to the movies really excited to see This is the End, and it was full so we decided to see Now You See Me instead. The movie had a lot of famous actors but I wasn't excited about it. The movie is about four magicians that answer to a mysterious call and began to do a series of tricks together. They become really famous and decide to steal a bank using their tricks and doing it in front of a live public. The plot thickens when they achieve their goals and everything get complicated. At the end you have a wonderful twist that leave the spectator surprised and really into the movie.
I really suggest you to see it, I assure you will love it. The movie's effects are really well done, and each actor gives an exceptional performance. The movie has great music that make the public connect with every scene and  every actor. Even though they are criminals, you become so into them that you will love every single magician from the beginning until the end, seeing them as a some kind of modern Robin Hood.

Worst: This Is The End

107 min  -  Comedy | Fantasy  -  12 June 2013 (USA)
Ratings: 7.1/10

In my opinion, this movie was a total disaster. People talked so much about it that I wanted to see it so bad, but every time I went to the movies, it was full so I had to see it on Redbox. I was truly disappointed with it. The movie had an awesome publicity showing a lot of known actors playing as themselves. The movie is about the end of the world that occurs during a Hollywood party hosted by  James Franco. A lot of famous actors die and they have to stay inside Franco's house to survive. Trying to survive a lot of weird thing happen between them as the plot thickens.
Maybe, it was because I saw alone in my computer that I didn't laugh during the movie. I found it kind of lame. Some of the jokes were a little bit weird. Some thing that I really liked was that they used a lot of random references to previous works of the actors. I understand all of them, so I really liked that. Maybe the movie is more of a see it with your friends while you get drunk movie than a movie that you see alone. Anyways, even though I didn't like it, I still recommended it because maybe it has your type of sense of humor and you will laugh about it doesn't make any

My dad bought me my first car a year ago. Since I was a little girl I always dreamed about having a VW Beetle. I was so excited when we were looking at it. I felt butterflies in my stomach. My knees were a little bit shaky when I sat on my Beetle for the first time. My dad and I spent the entire afternoon accesorizing and cleaning it. I just couldn't believe that finally I will have my own car to do all my stuff with full liberty. When I took it for a ride, it was truly amazing. I put my girly music on in a super high volume and sang so loud I couldn't hear the artists, the only thing in my head was my horrendous voice. I felt like the queen of the road. In my mind and in my heart it felt like I owned the entire world. I was truly happy. Since that moment, every time I use it I feel relax and happy. Driving my car is my relaxing time where I listened my music at the volume I want, think about my own stuff and just enjoy every single ride on my super awesome bug.
